Artist's Comments

Walking back from the art building about 2 am earlier this week, I saw this - it was foggy out, so the light caught in the air

this is the Sentinel - big ol' sculpture at RIT, regarded by many as weird, pretentious, or ugly... "car wreck" is often a term used to describe it... but to be honest, I really kinda like it

That's really awsome. But why were you at building 7 at 2:00 in the morning?
:iconfenrus777:
drawing projects, my friend, drawing projects... they have been the cause of many long night in building 7 (i don't have room to work in my dorm, and you know, they never kick you out of the 2d rooms...)
:iconlaimon:
Nice capture dude, and for what it's worth, I never had anything against the sculpture
:icondrippingglass:
Nice. How much processing did you do? It looks pretty grainy, perhaps from the long exposure (10/20 of a sec? wtf?)

btw - it says 3:06 am, for what it's worth.

confused? look under details - I was surprised to see the EXIF stuff was still there after I edited too.
:iconfenrus777:
yeah, CS leaves EXIF data in the files - maybe it was 3am, can't remember for sure - it's entirely possible

yeah, the color shot was noisy as all get out... i did a little work to try to fix it, but both blue and red channels were pretty bad... i did this with channel mixer, got rid of the red channel completely, but i wanted to include some of the blue channel (which i applied "dust & scratches" to) because it was the brightest where the light shines out and darker in the surrounding areas, and i wanted that to come out more... perhaps i could get the blue channel smoother with more time, but i'd certainly have to experiment, because the noise is really bad
:iconarky-sparky:
OHHHH! I really love the tension in this! It totally looks Hitchcockish to me, hugely dramatic backlighting, fog, skeleton trees....very, very moody! Love it man, love it. I'm afraid I can't really advise you on the techinical side, I like the noise in it, and personally, I don't know anything about mixing channels and shit. It's kinda sad, I have Photoshop CS (thanks to a well connected honey) and I don't even know how to use like 97% of the tools in it! The manual is six inches thick! And I just don't have time for the online tutorials....maybe this summer...dunno. Could you give me a quick inform?

haha... i don't know if anyone knows everything that photoshop can do... basically, there are three channels in RGB, red green and blue (if that wasn't obvious) - you can see those individually by clicking the "channels" tab of the layer palette thingy... blue, for whatever reason (i don't remember) tends to be the noisiest channel... the channel mixer is IMHO the best way to make black&white photos from color digitals, because it allows you to control the amount of each channel that goes into the B&W mix, rather than letting the software do it arbitrarily... you'll find channel mixer under image>adjustments, or better yet, add it as an adjustment layer (the half-black-half-white circley icon at the bottom of the layer palette thingy

pretty much all the photo adjustment stuff i know, i learned in a class fall quarter... maybe this summer i'll bring the book home and let you shred your way through it
:iconairdeck:
maybe you never reset your camera clock back in fall?
:icondrippingglass:
well, i know in the manual for alicia's camera, it mentions that the cam applies special processing to long exposures, 'cause apparently CCD's get noisier and noisier for longer exposures. I imagine that's part of the problem.
